In light of the health care crisis, should COBRA be extended for more than 3 years?

In light of the Health Care Crisis, and the number of people who are divorced, should COBRA benefits (the right to receive and pay for health insurance benefits under your spouse's employer's health insurance) be extended to beyond three (3) years.

I think it should be extended to the number of years the couple was married.

COBRA is the federal statute that entitles spouses to continue to receive and pay for health insurance under their ex spouse's plan for 3 years.

COBRA is also available when an employee is terminated from employment for 18 months.
