Writing a will

Does a will have to be done by a lawyer to be a legally binding document? I'm wondering if I write one up and just have it witnessed or even notarized, if that would be sufficient or not. I don't have a lot to leave anyone at this point in my life so I don't see the point of shelling out several hundred dollars.
