In the last couple of years, the American Federation of Musicians has had trouble with airlines not following industry standards for security for allowing instruments in the cabin as opposed to being checked as baggage. The most difficult airline to deal with was Delta, which was boycotted although I think that situation may be resolved now.

Professional instruments can very easily be damaged when handled as baggage.
